The Stadtbibliothek Hannover can look back on over 575 years of history. Today it consists of the central city library, the 17 district libraries and the mobile library. It offers visitors books, newspapers, magazines, CDs, DVDs, Blu-Rays, sheet music and games. A total of 1.1 million media units are available for lending or use on site. Digital media and streaming services are increasingly being offered and used.
The media stocks are used for information, school and vocational education and training, reading promotion, leisure activities and entertainment.
With its wide range of services, the Stadtbibliothek Hannover contributes to the formation of political opinion in the democratic community.17 district libraries are cultural meeting places for children, schoolchildren, families and the elderly. They support learning, career entry and orientation in everyday life. They are information centres in the district and partners in the cultural and social fabric of the district. For children, there is a regular programme of events with youth book weeks, reading and play lessons, author readings and picture book cinema. Events for adults in the central library: readings, lectures, concerts, since 2018 in the newly established Kre@tivraum training courses on e-readers and learning platforms as well as creative hands-on workshops.
The mobile library serves seventeen locations and thus ensures the supply of literature in residential areas where there is no fixed library.
BibliothekPlus: in addition to opening hours with staff, the Youth Library and City Library List offers 32 additional hours of opening hours per week. For reading, working, borrowing and returning. Access to the library is via electronic access control.
Public Internet access and WLAN are available in all libraries.
